Answers for the Marine Production Notebook
Short answers to recurring equipment and workflow questions. Follow the guides for the conditions behind each answer.
Can I use a housing's depth rating for the entire rig?
Not automatically. Check the documented limits and compatibility of the housing, port, connectors and every fitted accessory. The assembly may be constrained by an individual component. Start with the housing configuration guide.
Does a vacuum check prove the housing is safe at depth?
No. It may help detect some sealing problems according to the system's instructions. It does not certify pressure resistance or replace manufacturer procedures.
Is a dome port always better than a flat port?
No. The appropriate choice depends on the lens, image requirement and supported configuration. Dome geometry and lens focus capability matter; flat ports can suit some close-subject work. See water optics.
Can white balance recover every underwater colour?
No. White balance changes channel relationships but cannot reconstruct information that was not recorded. Strong correction may reveal noise, and clipped information is lost.
Why do powerful lights sometimes make the image worse?
They may illuminate suspended particles or overwhelm the foreground. Adjust beam placement, distance and output for the actual conditions rather than assuming more power is better.
Is raw recording essential for a marine documentary?
No. Choose the format around the production's image needs, recording reliability, power, storage and post-production capacity. Raw does not remove exposure or optical constraints.
Should an animal be moved to improve a shot?
Do not touch, chase, restrain, feed or reposition wildlife for coverage. Document authorised specialist interventions accurately rather than presenting them as undisturbed behaviour. Read the subject-led fieldwork guide.
Are two copies on one drive a backup?
They share the same device failure risk. Use independent destinations, verification reports and an agreed retention policy before releasing camera cards. The media-care guide explains the handover chain.
Does this site provide professional dive training?
No. It explains production decisions. Diving competence, operational planning, permissions and emergency arrangements belong to qualified personnel and the applicable jurisdiction.
